Photographs of the Past

$12.00

“Photographs of the Past” is a collection of intermediate-level piano pieces inspired by memories captured through photographs. The pieces are written in ternary form, inspired by the da capo aria, where the returning section invites brief moments of improvisation. Just as photographs can transport us back to moments we once lived, these works reflect emotions and impressions that remain long after the moment has passed. Each piece is a musical reflection—an attempt to translate memory into sound. The White Sea recalls a visit to Severodvinsk, Russia, where the vast, quiet northern waters left a lasting impression. The music evokes the stillness and spacious beauty of the landscape. The Harvest reflects a memory of traveling through the countryside of Vietnam, capturing the excitement, rhythm, and vitality of rural life during harvest time. The Ballerina was inspired by the picture of a ballerina dancing while I accompanied her on the piano in Rochester, New Hampshire. Graceful movement, discipline, and quiet elegance are expressed through flowing melodic lines. Like photographs, these musical snapshots preserve moments from the past. “Photographs of the Past” is my way of expressing these memories through sound. I hope these pieces inspire you to reflect on your own memories and perhaps bring them to life in song. Sincerely, Duy Bui
